Release, Patch, Trial Solution – What's the Difference?

By Jennifer Bennett

If you’ve ever wondered what the difference between a release, a patch or a trial solution is, here’s your answer!

What is a Release?

A release is an installable package that is made available to all of our customers on active maintenance. New versions are released to customers on a yearly basis and may contain new functionality, enhancements, incident resolutions and support for new environments.  Release Notes and technical specifications are included with a version release and the version must match between the uPerform Server and the uPerform Client.

What is a Patch?

A patch is an installable package that is made available to all of our customers on active maintenance.  Patches are designed to fix bugs that have been identified since the last release of the full release package.  Patches generally do not contain any enhancements to the product, but only address specific issues.  The patch version must match between the uPerform Server and the uPerform Client, which means if you install the patch on one component, the other component must be upgraded as well.

What is a Trial Solution?

A trial solution is a file or a set of files that have been developed to address a specific issue and has undergone limited testing.  Trial solutions are provided by our Engineering Solution team during the troubleshooting process of an issue and require manual installation. All trial solutions will be included in the next release of the product, whether it be a patch or version release.
